Watching Populations Melt Down.

چکیده
One of the curious features of Darwinian Evolution is that it requires errors to be made during genome replication. Otherwise, beneficial mutations could not occur and adaptation would arrest. Not surprisingly, however, random DNA copy errors usually do not lead to improvement—most mutations are deleterious or have little effect (1). Because, as far as we know, evolution has not found a way to selectively boost beneficial mutations, one wonders how large replication error rates could possibly be without overwhelming the population with deleterious mutations (2). This question of maximal sustainable mutation rates has fascinated theoretical evolutionary biologists for decades (2,3), yet experimental results are scarce. Now, Max Lavrentovich (a theorist), Mary Wahl (an experimenter), and their colleagues (4) describe an elegant way to watch microbial populations on the verge of succumbing to deleterious mutants. The simplest model for the tradeoff between natural selection and deleterious mutations is illustrated in a two-state population model in Fig. 1. One-way mutations occurring at rate m per generation supply a continuous flux from the wild-type to the mutant type. This flux is compen-

Extracting Measures of Active Learning and Student Self-Regulated Learning Strategies from MOOC Data
Previous work has demonstrated that in the context of Massively Open Online Courses (MOOCs), doing activities is more predictive of learning than reading text or watching videos (Koedinger et al., 2015). This paper breaks down the general behaviors of reading and watching into finer behaviors, and considers how these finer behaviors may provide evidence for active learning as well. By character...
متن کاملFormulation and Characterization of Solid Dispersion Prepared by Hot Melt Mixing: A Fast Screening Approach for Polymer Selection
Solid dispersion is molecular dispersion of drug in a polymer matrix which leads to improved solubility and hence better bioavailability. Solvent evaporation technique was employed to prepare films of different combinations of polymers, plasticizer, and a modal drug sulindac to narrow down on a few polymer-plasticizer-sulindac combinations. The sulindac-polymer-plasticizer combination that was ...
متن کاملMelt Reintegration Modelling: Testing against a Subsolidus Reference Assemblage
Phase equilibria modelling incorporating melt reintegration offers a methodology to create hypothetical rock compositions that may have existed prior to melt loss, allowing the potential prograde evolution of rocks to be explored. However, melt reintegration modelling relies on assumptions concerning the volume of melt that was lost and is generally restricted by the absence of direct constrain...
متن کاملRapid hydrothermal cooling above the axial melt lens at fast-spreading mid-ocean ridge
Axial melt lenses sandwiched between the lower oceanic crust and the sheeted dike sequences at fast-spreading mid-ocean ridges are assumed to be the major magma source of oceanic crust accretion. According to the widely discussed "gabbro glacier" model, the formation of the lower oceanic crust requires efficient cooling of the axial melt lens, leading to partial crystallization and crystal-melt...
